How it all began

Hi, I’m Kelly and this is how I created Heritage hair.

After losing my much beloved mare 7 years ago I was absolutely devastated and wanted to find a way to keep a part of her with me forever but as she had sweet itch and her passing was so unexpected I was only able to collect a small amount of her hair. When I started looking to have something made from her hair I found that the small amount that I had gave me very limited options.

Another struggle I had was finding something that I felt suited me and my horses personality that was not only well made but also within my small budget at such an expensive time (those vet bills soon mount up).  A big concern of mine was sending off my precious hair and not knowing what was happening with it.

Having a creative mind & an artistic flare I opted for making my own. Having an interest in crafts it felt like this was a logical step for me. I felt I could focus on the doubts and questions I had myself. After making my own keepsake I had interest from friends and decided that I wanted to start making items for others, which I have done occasionally over the years. Through lockdown last year I decided that I wanted to work on a larger scale & help more people. I wanted to provide a service that helped others in a way I would have liked to received.

Knowing that other people may be in the same position as me of not having much hair I wanted to design some products that could be created using only a few strands of hair –something that could be collected from a brush if need be so that everyone could have something even if they hadn’t had a chance to collect hair directly from their horse.

After Struggling so much to find something completely to my tastes I have aimed to create a business where the products are completely customisable.

I Know that not everybody is in the position to afford the prices of certain sterling silver products but think everybody deserves the opportunity to have their own keepsake so I have also designed a range of products using stainless steel as an alternative to sterling silver to suit the lower budgets whilst still being stylish and long lasting.

As one of my concerns was sending off my precious hair and not knowing what was happening with it I decided that I would keep people informed every step of the way. Not only does this provide the customer with total reassurance that everything is going exactly how they imagine but it also provides me with feedback to make sure their item is perfect to them.

Whilst building a brand that I hope is reliable, sympathetic, affordable and easy to work with I’ve had the privilege of working with some amazing people to bring their creations to life for them using their treasured hair.  As well as building a good following on social media I now have welcomed 3 animal loving brand ambassadors to my team & over the next few weeks they will all take a turn to introduce themselves to you.
